    GUS

Another piece of Type Three History we brought along from the VW-shopping is this GUS (for those of you who are not familiar with VW-words, this means Good Used Stock or did I just ade this up?) early Type Three fender.
It may looks a little scruffy but actually this piece of VW history doesn't need any welding. As a matter of fact it was used to make a moulding to fabricate some polyester replacement wings so there still some polyester stuck to it but this will be gone in no time.
One day this right-side front wing will find its way on my '65 1500S when I put it back to its original Sea Sand paint because the curently fitted wing has seen better days...
So things really start to look OK for the rebuild which is a really good feeling.
If anyone needs some more Type Three body parts, just mail us, maybe we could just help you out...

    NOS

Yesterday, Messi (not the 18 year old talented Barca-player but our own DVF Messi) went VW-shopping again.
And we got home with some very nice pieces that would make any Lover of the Third Kind drone on. The nicest part we brought along is this NOS (New Old Stock for those not familiar with the word NOS) early Type engine lid.
Messi found this nice piece on e-Bay during my trip to Mexico and he realised that this piece of history would look very good on my '65 1500S, so he made an (last-second) offer and got away with it. So now this nice piece of NOS is mine know...

    Piggy Bank

Remember the imps from some post back that laid their hands on my ride while I was out of the country?
Well Messie was able to shot them while working and he send me this picture.
I couldn't help but wondering why this imp is holding his rearend while striping my ride. Is that necessary to get a more standy hand or was his ass just vreezing off? Or maybe he didn't want anyone sticking some spare change in the piggy bank...

    Been Thinking...

About my project ride which will listen to the name of El Picaro.
It will be based around my '86 Hecho en Mexico Bug painted Parika red and should features my all time favorite 4-lug wheels 'Empi Sprinstars' in 4.5 and 5.5inch.
If everything goes to plan it will look something a little like this. Something like a late looker would do the trick. Want to know more, just stay tuned...

Still Avid Fan of the Sedan

These days I'm always talking about the beloved Type 3 which is the top of the range of the old aircooled VW (except for the Karmann Ghia models), but don't get me wrong, I'm still an avid fan of the sedans produced by VW.
The featured bug here isn't that bad at all with it's modern looks. For instance, check out the Lexus styled rear lights (typical Hecho en Mexico) and the modern wheels. Not really features on my wish-list but they do give the bug that little more to stand out from the crowd. Have you also noticed the Stinger? Might be a little loud for daily use and these shure do act as in Cop-magnet in our regions (ask Jelle).

A Quest For Real VW Power?

If you're looking for the VW with ultimate power which can be driver hard as nails as showed in the posts below, this close up shows you the car you should be looking for: the 64-65 type 3 1500S.
These beauties left the VW factory with the most powerfull VW-engine of that era featuring a massive 1493cc, a compressionratio of 8.5:1 due to high compressions pistons and 2 single draft carbs. This combo produced 54hp @ 4200 rmp and pushes the 910kg heavy Notch to a maximum cruising speed of 135 km/h and a top speeds of 155kmh (tested and aproved by myself) in forth gear. To give you a better idea about this massive power display, the 1500S took you from 0 to 100 kmh in just 21 seconds.
So I'm not kidding if I'm telling when you if you're looking for massive horsepower you should look out for these nice 1500s'es.

    Type 3 Action pt 2

Another fine picture out of the old box that shows the ability of the Type 3 to be driven hard on all kind of roads.
Is this typical for the Type 3 driver to set up a funky face when the going gets tough behind the wheel of the powerfull 1500S?

    Type 3 Action pt 1

Yesterday, my buddy Messie send me some pictures of early Type 3 in ralley disguise showing some 'raw' horsepower. By coincidence another pretty famous blog called 'Speedwell' published also some pictures of the not so common rally (or Baja) versoins of our bloved Type 3's.
This pictures just makes clear that the Third Kind was destined to be driven hard, so hard that the driver needed to transfer his bodyweight to get around the corner in a decent way.
    Thanks for the picture Messie.

    Back on the road?

I was just wondering how it is going with my Deutsche Freund Felix of DFL.
It's been a while since we heard some news of him so this could be the right time to ask. I know he fucked up the gearbox of his o so cool 1776 powered Notch at Das Drag Day 3. I hope his gearbox-problems are solved by now so he will get his ride ready for the DFL May Cruise Madness.
Guess we'll see that for ourselves as some DVF'ers are planning a trip to Hannover at the end of April to join in on this event and visit the Maikaefer-Treffen the next day. I've heard these events are shure worth a visit. If anyone wishes to join in on the trip to Hannover, just let us know.
Say Hello to Felix: Hello Felix...

    One update a day...

...will keep the bored readers away.
So let's get to it and why not start with a very sexy panelvan squareback on BRM's. Note how the black paint stands out in the sun. A trully superb ride that is...
But for those of you who are still not satisfied, visit my buddies Dr Jeckill and Low Fast Bus their blogs, the blogs of our events (Bugtour and X-Town-Traffic) or check out VW-blog-list...

    Mexico Dreaming

Sorry but it looks like I'm still Mexico dreaming: blue sky, palm trees, drinking fresh cocos, sun, sea, (almost) deserted beaches and not to forget roofless, aircooled VW's to cruise around and spot the chicas in tinny bikinis...
Life can be beautiful with small things...

    Asi es Mexico

Who needs a workshop when you've got the whole street to work on?
In the morning, I saw the guy who did this walking around town with a second hand head in his hands. And when you don't have place in a workshop to swap heads, you just unbold the engine in the middle of the street (in the middle of town that is) between the parked cars, tear half of your engine apart and do the things you need to do. At least he choose the right side of the street to work on, on the other side of the street, he would have been way to tursty from the burning sun and you all know what Tequila does with your head when you drink to much of it in the hot hot sun...
Have you noticed the handfull of tools he used? I guess the most used tool would be the vise-grip.

    Imps In Mi taller Pt2

Close up of one of the pinstripes now featured on my 1500S. The gloss black pinstripe really works well against the flat black body color.

But I still wonder what the pink accents are doing there? Could it be that this has something to do with the previous color of this ride? How do those tinny imps knew that?

    Imps In Mi Taller

Some of you might have allready read it on Dr. Jeckills blog but during my 3 weeks of absence, some imps have worked their hands on Notchback.
I must admid that they have done a great job: the primered wings are painted again, the roof of my ride is now painted in glass black in accordance to the 1500S-two-color-scheme and some very cool ghost pinstripes (also in gloss black) brighten up the flat black body.
As a matter of fact, the imps who did this are actually DVF-members and listen to the names of Dr. Jeckill, Low Fast Bus an Messie. Thanks for the nice job you all have done. Next time we meet, we'll talk this over with a bottle of Mexico's purest...

    Sabritas

Just like our beloved bug, busses are a very common sight on the streets of Mexico too. Most of them are in a very poor condition and this one is used to promote Sabritas.

    Cal Look Wheels

Anyone ever seen those cool 5-lug wheels on an early bug in Europe? Well I certainly haven't. Too bad 'cause they do look good. They sported the bug published below.
If you have more info about them, just post it in the comments.

    Looker Hecho En Mexico

Some post ago Messie published some pictures of Mexican Lookers. Not realy my cup of thee but that is how most bugs rule the streets of Mexico.
This '59 bug is something else, it has almost all the features needed to be called 'California Look': right stance, lack of bumpers and some cool aftermarkted wheels. the only thing that isn't there is the powerfull engine-combo, but at least the aftermarkted (home-made) exhaust is there.
